Our top three tips for successful grant writing

  • Communicate Directly with funders

While webinars and background information are useful, direct communication with funders is critical. This ensures alignment with the goals of the funding opportunity. For example, funders may provide feedback on highlighting the potential economic impacts of a roadway improvement project. Even if an application is unsuccessful, a debrief call offers valuable insights for future opportunities.

  • Engage Early and Broadly

Leverage meeting minutes, survey data, and written plans to demonstrate community support. Documenting local investment strengthens your application and highlights the project’s significance. For instance, hosting a community workshop for a proposed park project not only engages residents but also showcases the time and resources invested in project planning.

  • Define a Clear Scope of Work with Cost Estimates

A well-defined scope with detailed tasks, timelines, and cost estimates signals thorough planning. This clarity assures funders that the project is well-conceived and increases the likelihood of timely and cost-effective completion.
